What is a root canal?
When do you need a root canal?
A root canal (endodontic treatment) is a dental procedure used to remove pulp infection, preserve teeth and prevent re-infection. This procedure can help preserve your natural teeth, reduce pain, and restore your teeth to health.
- Tooth sensitivity (particularly to cold and hot sensations)
- Severe pain while biting or chewing
- Bumps or pimple-like bums on the gum
- Darkening of the gums or deep decay
- Tender or swollen gums
- A cracked or chipped tooth
- An abscessed tooth
How long do root canals take?
How are root canals performed?
When performing a root canal, your dentist or endodontist will take x-rays of your teeth to determine if the procedure is feasible and if the infection has spread to other areas.
Next, your dentist will anesthetize the cavity near your affected tooth with a small amount of decongestant and then inject a local anesthetic into the cavity. Once your tooth is numb, your dentist can access the affected pulp by making a small opening in the top of the tooth. This pulp contains blood fats, sensitive nerves, and bacteria, which your dentist will remove before thoroughly cleaning all the canals in the tooth. Your dentist will immediately apply antibiotics to the area to disinfect it and prevent re-infection.
Once the canals are disinfected and cleaned, your dentist will complete the procedure by filling and sealing your teeth.
